Ok so I’ve been really inactive lately as I’ve just been totally wiped out by this awful flu. Coughs, runny-noses, blocked noses, hot-sweats, cold-sweats, insomnia, excessive napping… you name it I’ve had it! We all know bagging an appointment with your GP can be like winning the lottery itself, and even when your there they are often reluctant to give you anything. So I thought I’d share my top tips with yal to help you and me get back into the swing of things. Hopefully none of you suffer the plague as I have known it, but if you do hopefully with this sound advice you will come out the other side. 👩🏽⚕️🙌💯
1.)Avoid cough medicines!💉💊
My first reaction to getting sick, naturally was to go to the pharmacy and buy everything on the shelf. I guess we often find it reassuring to feel we are doing something to help ourselves. I spent a bloody fortune! You name it I got it. Cough medicine- ahhh, but is it dry, tickly, or chesty? Hmm, I’ll buy all three to be on the safe side. Oooh a throat spray? I’ve never seen that before, but I’m sure it’ll come in handy! Mmm Lemsip, winner winner. I’ll be healed in no time! Buy the time I’d loaded up on all these drugs I quite frankly felt out of it. Some of the side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision etc. etc. Which doesn’t really help alongside the flu-like symptoms you’re suffering from in the first place! My GP told me to avoid any of these kinds of medicines which made me feel a bit silly.
2.)Stick with natural remedies🍯🍋
If suffering with a poorly cough, sore throat and other cold or flu like symptoms it’s best to drink lots of hot drinks. The GP’s advice to me was drink hot water, honey and lemon. Good job it’s delicious!
An old wives tale that seemed to help me along the way was gargling salt water. Not as delicious as honey and lemon I’ll admit but it definitely does that trick. Simply dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in a full glass of water. Swish it round your mouth and gargle like mouthwash and spit it out. Keep doing this until it’s gone. The salt water loosens the mucus and so decreases the severity of your symptoms. Though skeptical I feel this was beneficial.
Vapor rub is one of my go-to ointments whenever I feel a bit chesty! It reminds me of being a child but it always does the job. You can either rub it on your chest and back or put a spoonful in a bowl of hot water and use it as a kind-of steamer- putting your face over the bowl of vapoury freshness for around 10-15 minutes. It has a strong smell which helps to open the air passages, combating congestion, reducing coughing and improving sleep. Sometimes if I am in the bath I even put it in my wax burner! Strong stinky goodness…. mmmm! 💚😷✅
3.)Stay hydrated 💦💦
It’s important to drink plenty of clear fluids to prevent from dehydration when you are sick. A constant flow of fresh water is never a bad call but hot drinks can help loosen up mucus and be beneficial if you are suffering from a head cold or bad cough too. Either way remember to stay hydrated kids ✌️👅💦
4.)If you can eat… plenty of fruit and veg!🍌🍊🥑🥕
I know when your ill you don’t often feel like eating, but it is important to get some nutrition into you in order to make a fast and full recovery. Chicken soup is supposed to be really good in the healing process while fruit juices such like O.J can provide vitamin C helping to boost the immune system. Ice pops can help go sooth a sore throat while keeping you hydrated which is essential in fighting the flu. Make sure you get ice pops that are made from 100% fruit juices though in order to get the nutrients, not ones made from sugar water- otherwise you could always make your own.
5.)Allow yourself to be sick 😷
We live in a fast-paced world and it’s often hard to get a minute to yourself, but if you are genuinely sick you will struggle to get back to your functional self if don’t give yourself some time-out. Being a workaholic I definitely found it hard to put down my laptop and call it a day, but it was what my body was calling out for. By taking some time out to catch up on some much needed sleep I was allowing my body to recover. I always say you do you! Jamas on, feet up, cuppa at the ready. Whether you catch up on your favourite box set, feel like getting lost in a book or simply having a nap on the sofa. Make sure you take some time out to have a rest and recover. After all you’ve probably been over working yourself for so long you are run down too, that’s how you possibly got in this state in the first place.
Remember if you suffer with mental health problems, it’s likely that these symptoms could exasperate through being physically unwell. So try to be kind and patient with yourself. It may not feel like it, but it will pass.
6.)Avoid smoking… duh!🚬
This may sound obvious to some, however some many smokers continue to inhale the same amount despite being ill. Smoking while sick is a sure way to slow down the process of recovery and could even worsen symptoms. Best advice would be to stay away from the cigs totally until you are over your illness rather than prolonging your suffering.
Whether you prefer a bath or a shower having a good ol’ scrub will undoubtedly make you feel better if you suffering from the flu. The steam will help clear up congestion and makes you feel a lot fresher while the hot water takes away aches and pains. Also the feeling of being clean is next to none, even if your just putting a fresh pair of jamas back on. It really makes you feel like you’ve accomplished something. You know those little achievements!
If you decide to opt for a bath I would definitely recommend adding bath salts and essential oils. Lavender oil is great for relaxation while tea tree and eucalyptus oil can combat germs and break up mucus. Fill the tub, choose your salts/oils and relax!
