After ten long, hard years of drinking- one stomach pump due to alcohol poisoning, many a hangover, drunken arguments, fights and too many times waking up just thinking ‘WTF?’ I have decided to throw in the towel. I’m not going to lie some of my funniest memories have been when I’ve been smashed of my face; but how could they have not been? I’ve spent the majority of my time in that state! Now after doing some soul searching I’ve come to realise that I do have an addictive personality- I can never go to the pub to just enjoy ‘ just the one’. It usually turns into me rolling in about 5am the next morning, probably under the influence of a lot more than alcohol. All of this behavior really does have a negative effect on my mental health, something I’ve been trying my best to improve over the past few years. I ask myself what is the point in doing all this work on me and my mental health when really this negative behaviour could be what is holding me back, keeping me in this vicious cycle? No I don’t think sober life will be a bed of roses. Yes it will have it’s ups and downs as anybody’s life does. But at least I will be able to feel again, deal with things in the appropriate manner and generally be a lot healthier than I have been in the past- both physically and mentally. I’ve already began to embark on my journey into sober living and I now see that I don’t really have much to lose, yet so much to gain.
Since making these lifestyle changes, a lot of my friends and family seemed quite surprised (is there any wonder? I’ve spent the past ten years getting off my face) yet still supportive, which I am so grateful for.
Yes this may be a big change, but just to let you all know that I’m not the only sober person on the planet I thought I’d write a little post about my favourite sober celebs to show you that sober can be sexy, cool, fun, smart- whatever you like. But sober is definitely not boring!
Oh my favourite Daddy! After years of alcoholism starting in his teens lasting through to his mid twenties, literally ending in a car crash; Rob drove his car drunk into the side of the LA Department of Water and Power building. Rob has been sober for 15 years now, putting his energy into comedy, gratitude and volunteering. This American currently lives in the UK as he is making Catastrophe for Channel 4 -hilarious if you haven’t seen it! I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Delaney in stand up and he is just as warm and funny as you’d imagine, if you ever get chance to see him I would definitely recommend. It is so great to see someone speak so openly about their troubles with addiction and depression as this can often be something that people, particularly men, find hard to talk about. I think Rob certainly helps to break down these barriers in a comedic way and shows that a sober life is certainly not a boring life.
The Real Madrid superstar is dry as a bone. Cristiano grew up poor in Madeira, Portugal. His father Jose Dinis Aveiro was an alcoholic and passed away at the age of 52 through liver disease. Due to this Ronaldo has stated he would never touch alcohol as it reminds him of the death of his father. The footballer would offer his father rehab to address his alcohol addiction, but he always refused. What a story. I may have fallen even more in love.
3.)Lana Del Rey
Weird and wonderful artist suffered from alcohol addiction from a young age and was sent to boarding school by her parents to get sober at just age 14. She describes these as her ‘wilderness years’. Remarkably my witchy gal Lana has stayed clean and sober for 12 years throughout her pop career. “When I write about the thing that I’ve lost I feel like I’m writing about alcohol because that was the first love of my life…” Go Lana! Stay strong girl!
Man of many talents yet has fallen to so many addictions, Russell Brand has been living sober for 13 years now. Someone I can relate to, he admits he can’t just have one so would rather have none. “For me, this is not an option. I will relinquish all else to ride that buzz to oblivion. Even if it began as a timid glass of chardonnay on a ponce’s yacht, it would end with me necking the bottle, swimming to shore and sprinting to Bethnal Green in search of a crack house. I look to drugs and booze to fill up a hole in me; unchecked, the call of the wild is too strong.” If the urge is really that strong each time you go to your local, surely you are better off fighting it and saying no than giving in and going on a massive bender ruining your life slowly but surely? It just makes sense doesn’t it? Now Russell is committed in recovery, he helps other addicts find their way out of this awful disease.
5/6.)Kim Cattrall & Kristin Davis (Samantha & Charlotte)
Okay okay this is two-in-one, but I was shocked to learn this Sex and the City duo are sober! What about all those Cosmo’s? Apparently Kim Cattrall (Samantha) prefers not to drink as it gives her a headache. While Kristin Davis (Charlotte) was a bit of a wild child going teetotal at 22 “I drank a lot when I was a teenager and I don’t drink any more, because that’s when I thought, you know, I’m gonna end up a car wreck…I got into the acting programme, it was very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn’t doing so well in my classes. I thought, ‘Do you know what? It’s going to be one or the other. I can’t really have both.’” Who’d have thought, ey? Kinda thinking false advertising but also good for you…
Obama’s right-hand man does not and never has drank the devil’s juice. He prefers a mocktail stating “never had a drink in my life, too many alcoholics in my family.” Fair play Biden. As if we couldn’t love you anymore!
But staying sober doesn’t necessarily make you a better person…
Donald Trump abstains from alchohol, drugs and even coffee after losing his brother at just 42 through alcoholism.
Have you took the plunge? Thinking of throwing in the towel like me? What are your thoughts on going sober? Let me know I’d love to hear from you!
